A few weeks ago, we looked at the fact that only those who were able and willing were to work on constructing the tabernacle and only those who were willing were to contribute toward its completion as described in Exodus 35. Yet that was not the end of the story for that theme continued in the next chapter: only the skilled were to do the work:
- So Bezalel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the Lord has commanded (Exodus 36:1).
- Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work (Exodus 36:2).
- So all the skilled workers who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left what they were doing . . . (Exodus 36:4).
- All those who were skilled among the workers made the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim woven into them by expert hands (Exodus 36:8).
- They made the curtain of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen, with cherubim woven into it by a skilled worker (Exodus 36:35).
Webster's defines skill as "the ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance."In this context, there seems to be one way to become a skilled worker. First, the Lord must deposit the ability to understand and do the work. Then the recipient must work to perfect their skill. Finally, the person with the skill must express it every chance they get in God-honoring ways. In what areas do you have skill that you and others recognize? Does it bring you joy? Are you working to develop and perfect it? Are you then expressing it under God's direction or as you have opportunity to express it for the good and enjoyment of others?
