The people have reached the border of their land, but Moses can't go in with them. Thus, he turns the reins of leadership over to Joshua:
Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged" (Deuteronomy 30:7-8).
The transition from Moses to Joshua is the best example of leadership succession we have in the Bible. Moses didn't hang on too long and Joshua did not usurp Moses' authority before he was ready to lead.
It's noteworthy that Joshua didn't strive for his position, but it must have borne witness to what he knew he was created to do. The point is that Moses established Joshua and gave him the word of the Lord for his life, and sometimes others can see more clearly than you can as to your gifts, strengths, and purpose. That means as you seek to find and fulfill purpose, you must listen to others perspective on who they see you to be—but not allow them to dictate who they see you to be.
Even Paul submitted his gospel to the Gentiles to the Jerusalem apostles, but did so with this mindset: "As for those who were held in high esteem—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—they added nothing to my message" (Galatians 2:6). Do you have some sense of what your purpose and creative gifts are? Where could you use some outside input to clarify who you are and what God has called you to do? Where have you put too much credence into someone else's opinion about who they think you are or aren't? Where have you put too little?
God wants you to know His will so He will use people to reveal or clarify it. Just make sure you aren't seeking many opinions as a tactic to delay your obedience. You aren't look for people to take a vote on what you are to do. You are looking for people to confirm it.
